Postdoctoral Research Fellow (CISMAC)

At the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Global Public Health and Primary Care, Center of Excellence; Centre for Intervention Sciences in Maternal and Child Health (www.CISMAC.org), a 3-year 100% position as Postdoctoral Research Fellow is available. Up to 25% of the position will be mandatory work related to teaching epidemiology at the Center for International Health, Department of Global Public Health and Primary Care, supervising master students and PhD-candidates, and project management.

The postdoctoral fellow will primarily work with a CISMAC-funded study in Nepal entiteled “Vitamin B12 Supplementation During Pregnancy and Cognitive Development” on research questions related to pregnancy, maternity care, and birth outcomes.

We will also encourage the postdoctoral fellow to work with other CISMAC projects and with other CISMAC institutions. The position is financed by the University of Bergen. The appointed will work at the Division of Research, Innlandet Hospital Trust.

About the project/work tasks:

• CISMAC (www.CISMAC.org) is a Center of Excellence funded by the Norwegian Research Council and the University of Bergen, and is anchored at the Center for International Health, Department of Global Public Health and Primary Care. The center is an international consortium with research institutions in Ethiopia, India, Nepal, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia and Norway.
• CISMAC focuses on innovative interventions addressing continuity of care in maternal and child health (MNCH) in order to effectively and fairly promote MNCH and child development.
• The postdoctoral fellow will be linked to an intervention study among pregnant women in Nepal. In this study, vitamin B12 or placebo are given daily for a year. Main outcomes are growth and neurodevelopment.
• Other exposures and outcomes are being recorded to allow the intervention trial to address relevant associations using observational designs.
• The main focus for the fellow’s research will be maternal thyroid function, the presence of various environmental toxins, and neurodevelopment.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

• The applicant must hold a Norwegian PhD or an equivalent degree within epidemiological research on maternal and child health, or have the doctoral thesis submitted prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the PhD has been awarded and at the latest within 15 August 2020
• Applicants must have experience from maternal health research. Clinical experience as a midwife or an obstetrician and research experience within the fields of iodine nutrition, thyroid function, and environmental toxins represent added values.
• Applicants should have experience with developing and undertaking cohort studies or large clinical trials.
• Applicants must have experience with analyses of large epidemiological studies.
• Applicants must be proficient in both written and oral Norwegian and English.
• Applicants should be interested in statistical methods and wish to develop their expertise in this field.
• Emphasis will be placed on personal attributes such as being able to work independently and in a structured manner, being able to cooperate with others and across disciplines, to being motivated and responsible, and also having great work capacity and enthusiasm for research.

About the position of postdoctoral research fellow:

The position of postdoctoral research fellow is a fixed-term appointment with the primary objective of qualifying the appointee for work in top academic positions. You can not be employed as a postdoctoral fellow for more than one fixed term period at the same institution. Also, you cannot be employed in a postdoctoral position if you have previously held this type of position at a different institution in the region.

Upon appointment, applicants must submit a project proposal for the qualifying work including a work schedule. It is a requirement that the project is completed in the course of the period of employment.

The employee may be assigned required duties in the form of teaching and similar work at the department.

The fixed term period for the position is three years, with the possibility of an extension of the period with up to one year if a research-related stay abroad shall be included in the employment period.

Further promotion will be after service seniority in the position.
