The Faculty of Science and Technology

UiT The Arctic University of Norway with its main campus located in Tromsø is the northernmost university in the world. Its focus on climate and environment is clearly dictated by the geographical location at the edge of the Arctic. The main task of the Faculty of Science and Technology is to conduct research and teaching at high national and international level. Prioritized research areas include energy, climate, environment, maritime, marine, nano-, space-, and information technology; addressing both general topics and topics relevant for the High North.

UiT The Arctic University of Norway

UiT is a multi-campus research university in Norway and the northernmost university of the world. Our central location in the High North, our broad and diverse research and study portfolio, and our interdisciplinary qualities make us uniquely suited to meet the challenges of the future. At UiT you can explore global issues from a close-up perspective.

Credibility, academic freedom, closeness, creativity and commitment shall be hallmarks of the relationship between our employees, between our employees and our students and between UiT and our partners.

The position

The Department of Physics and Technology at UiT The Arctic University of Norway announces 2-3 vacant positions as Postdoctoral Research Fellow in machine/deep learning, multi-sensor processing, and scalable computing in remote sensing for large-scale Arctic applications. The appointments are for a period of three years, with the possibility of up to one year’s extension if teaching duties are undertaken.

The positions are funded by the Centre for Integrated Remote Sensing and Forecasting for Arctic Operations (CIRFA) and the “Extreme Earth”-project. CIRFA is a Centre for Research-based Innovation, financed by the Research Council of Norway together with the Centre’s research and user partners. “Extreme Earth” was granted by the by Horizon 2020 under the call: H2020-ICT-2018-2020, and involves cooperation with some highly ranked European research groups in remote sensing, computer science and machine learning. The positions are all affiliated to the Department of Physics and Technology, Faculty of Science and Technology, UiT The Arctic University of Norway.

The Department of Physics and Technology consists of six research groups: (1) Complex Systems Modelling, (2) Earth Observation, (3) Sustainable Energy, (4) Machine Learning, (5) Space Physics, and (6) Ultrasound, Microwaves and Optics. The department provides education at the Bachelor, Master, and PhD levels, and comprises 21 permanent scientific employees, and a technical/administrative staff of 12 persons.

The successful candidates will work at CIRFA.

Appointment to the positon of Postdoctoral Research Fellow is mainly intended to provide qualification for work in top academic positions. It is a prerequisite that the applicant be able to carry out the project over the full course of the employment period. No person may hold more than one fixed-term position as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the same institution.

The position can/will additionally be assigned to teaching and related work for UiT in an amount equivalent to a maximum 25 % of a full-time employment.

CIRFA and The Extreme Earth project

CIRFA does research on integrated remote sensing for Arctic operations by developing data analysis methods and technologies for reliably characterizing and monitoring the physical Arctic environment. It has seven multi-disciplinary research partners with expertise in remote sensing, oceanography, meteorology, and polar research, and nine user partners. See http://cirfa.uit.no/ for more information.

The Extreme Earth project does complimentary research to CIRFA by investigating deep learning architectures and algorithms for surface mapping from multi-sensor Copernicus data. Over the Polar regions, the technology will be applied to perform long-term temporal and large-scale spatial characterization of the sea ice cover and its complicated internal dynamics. See http://earthanalytics.eu/ for more information for more information

The project/position's field of research

The positions will be 100% devoted to research connected to the application areas of CIRFA (sea ice, met ocean, oil spill) and the Polar use case of Extreme Earth project (ice charting). The research will address studies of machine learning and deep learning methods for effective processing of large-scale, multi-modal remote sensing data, in which synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data will be a main data source, and high-performance, scalable distributed computing related to the above described application areas. The work will be synchronized with ongoing research in CIRFA and Extreme Earth.

The candidates may participate in research on one or several of the below listed topics:

  • Deep learning architectures for coping with weak and scarce training data in remote sensing
  • Physics constrained machine/deep learning models in polar remote sensing applications
  • Multi-sensor data analysis for automatic information extraction
  • Multi-resolution feature extraction and analysis of remotely sensed data
  • Machine learning methodologies for spatial upscaling in remote sensing

High-performance, scalable distributed computing for Copernicus Big data processing.
