The position

At the Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Clinical Medicine a position has become available for the role of PhD candidate for applicants wishing to take a Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) degree. The position is affiliated with K. G. Jebsen - Thrombosis Research and Expertise Center (TREC) and the project title is ‘Role of complement factors on the risk of venous thromboembolism". The position is based in Tromsø.

K. G. Jebsen TREC is a Research Center in translational medicine funded by the Kristian Gerhard Jebsen Foundation, UiT – the Arctic university of Norway, and the North Norwegian Health Authorities. The Center has 4.6 permanent scientific positions (professors), 3 technical positions, one statistician, and 15-20 temporary scientific positions (PhD-students, researchers and postdoctors). In addition, K. G. Jebsen TREC has partners in Tromsø, Bodø, Oslo, Århus and Leiden.

The objective of the position is to complete research training to the level of a doctoral degree. Admission to a PhD programme is a prerequisite for employment, and the programme period starts on commencement of the position. The PhD candidate shall participate in the faculty’s organized research training, and the PhD project shall be completed during the period of employment. The position is for a period of four years. The nominal lengt of the PhD program is three years. The fourth year is distrubuted as 25 % each year, and will consist of teaching and other duties for the Faculty of Health Sciences.

The project

VTE is a collective term for deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). VTE is a frequent disease affecting 1.1 mill Europeans annually with severe and irreversible complications, including 540,000 VTE-related deaths. We have recently shown that complement activation is associated with future risk of VTE. The overall aim of this project is to investigate whether components of the lechtin- and alternative pathways of the complement system is associated with VTE and to unravel to what extent these components are genetically determined.

There will be possibilities for up to one year research stay abroad with one of the partners of K. G. Jebsen TREC during the project period.

Qualifications

The suitable candidate must hold a Master’s Degree within medicine or epidemiology, or other relevant areas to the project. Master- and medical students in the final stages are also qualified to apply, but have to document completed degree before employment.

The applicant must speak and write English fluently. Advanced Norwegian skills will also be given weight.

Previous work experience and publications within the field of clinical epidemiology is desirable and will be given weight.

The candidate must be able to work systematic, independent and have the ability to work in an interdisciplinary research team.

Emphasis will be placed on the communicative and collaborative skills, as well as personal suitability and the motivation and interest in the project.

The successful applicant must fulfil the requirements for admission to the faculty’s PhD programme.

- One year’s completed university studies in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, the UK or USA, for which English was the language of instruction.

A shorter period of appointment may be decided when the PhD Candidate has already completed parts of their research training programme or when the appointment is based on a previous qualifying position PhD Candidate, research assistant, or the like in such a way that the total time used for research training amounts to three years.

As many as possible should have the opportunity to undertake organized research training. If you already hold a PhD or have equivalent competence, we will not appoint you to this position.

Remuneration for the position of PhD Candidate is in accordance with the State salary scale code 1017 or code 1378 depending on qualifications. A compulsory contribution of 2 % to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted.
