Position as PhD Research Fellow in sedimentology and volcanology available at the Department of Geosciences.

No one can be appointed for more than one PhD Research Fellowship period at the University of Oslo. Starting date no later than 01.10.2020.

The fellowship period is up to 4 years, with 3 years devoted to research education. The position entails a compulsory work load of 25% that may consist of teaching, supervision duties, and research assistance.

Job description

Remnants of several large calderas are present in the Permian Oslo Rift, formed during extensive explosive volcanism. In one of the calderas, there are sequences of sedimentary rocks representing the youngest preserved sediment deposits in the Oslo Rift. These rocks have never been studied in detail, but may give a unique insight into both the history and styles of caldera eruptions, the resulting landscape response, erosional regimes, and sediment transport.

The position is an interdisciplinary effort to explore the evolution of explosive volcanism and calderas, and the PhD will be working closely with a team of sedimentologists, volcanologists, and petrologists.

The project will focus on:

(1) Lithologies, sedimentology, and petrography of sedimentary rocks in the study area

(2) Sediment sources, petrography, and geochemistry

(3) Reconstructing the volcanic and sedimentary environments
