The Institute of Clinical Medicine (Klinmed) is one of three institutes under the Faculty. Klinmed is responsible for the Faculty's educational and research activities at Oslo University Hospital and Akershus University Hospital. With about 800 employees spread over approximately 425 man-labour years, Klinmed is the university's largest institute. Our activities follow the clinical activity at the hospitals and are spread across a number of geographical areas.

The Institute for Experimental Medical Research (IEMR) at the University of Oslo invites applicants holding, or soon to complete, a Master’s degree (MRes/MSc) in (molecular) biology, (bio-)chemistry or (molecular or bio-) medical disciplines to apply to a funded 3-year PhD position in cardiac research. The applicant should be fluent in English to join this internationally renowned laboratory, situated in the picturesque Capital of Norway. As a culturally diverse city a grasp of the Scandinavian languages is optional, however beneficial. No prior specialisation in cardiovascular research is required, however competence and experience in laboratory techniques is highly desirable.
More about the position
The PhD candidate will have affiliation and supervision at IEMR, the Department of Medicine (Senior Researcher Cathrine Rein Carlson, Prof. Geir Christensen and Prof. William Louch). The research quality of this laboratory is exemplified by the publishing of articles in world leading journals such as Cardiovascular Research, Circulation Research, JBC, Elife and JACC. The successful PhD candidate will explore the role and interaction of two proteins involved in familial cardiomyopathy. This is an exciting project with therapeutic potential.
IEMR employs around 70 people and consists of six cardiac research groups with backgrounds in molecular biology, physiology and cardiology. For more about IEMR, please see the institute web site: https://www.iemf.no/
The research fellow must take part in the University’s/ Faculty’s/ Department’s approved PhD program and is expected to complete the project
within the set fellowship period. The main purpose of the fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a PhD degree.
The applicant must, in collaboration with her/his supervisor, within 2 months after employment, have worked out a complete project description to be attached to the application for admission to the doctoral program. Qualification requirements
- Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in (molecular) biology, (bio-)chemistry or (molecular or bio-) medical disciplines
- Fluent oral and written communication skills in English

We seek a highly motivated, honest and skilled person, able to work effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team, who is eager to both gain and share insight while being focused on publishing papers in leading international journals. Candidates with prior experience in laboratory work, particular within cardiovascular research and/or signal transduction are highly encouraged to apply. Knowledge of the Norwegian language is not required.
