Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Socio-Legal Studies

The Department of International Studies and Interpreting at Oslo Metropolitan University https://www.oslomet.no/en/about/lui/ist has a vacancy for a fully-financed postdoctoral fellowship for two years and ten months. The position is part of the research project Riverine Rights – Exploring the Currents and Consequences of Legal Innovations on the Rights of Rivers that is financed by the FRIPRO Programme at the Norwegian Research Council. The project will investigate cases from New Zealand, Colombia and India, where rivers have been granted legal personhood, and the implications of these cases. The postdoctoral fellow will do research in one or more of the case countries.

The Faculty of Education and International Studies (LUI) has approximately 550 employees and 7000 students and is located in Oslo and Akershus. The Faculty is comprised of four departments as well as the National Centre of Multicultural Education (NAFO).

The Faculty educates tomorrow’s teachers from kindergarten through upper secondary school, in close cooperation with the field of practical training. The Faculty offers a PhD in Education. In addition, the Faculty offers development studies and studies in sign language and interpreting. Diversity is a core value for the Faculty and its activities. The Faculty’s research and development focuses on practical training and is both profession-oriented and internationally oriented.


The Department of International Studies and Interpreting (IST) has leading research communities in the fields of diversity, interpreting, global development and international education, and its activities are characterised by extensive international cooperation. The Department offers bachelor’s degrees in development studies, interpreting and sign language, as well as a master’s degree in international education and development. The Department also offers a number of programmes for continuing education in diversity studies.

Tasks and responsibilities

The post-doctoral fellow will be a full member of the project team, and will

  • carry out fieldwork in one or more of the case countries
  • contribute to the overall implementation of the research project
  • submit project research to academic publications, and communicate research to the general public
  • participate in research collaboration with national and international partners

Qualification requirements

  • Ph.D og equivalent degree
  • disciplinary background in the social sciences (including approaches from law)
  • relevant research experience from one or more of the case countries
  • ability to communicate well in English, both verbally and in written form
  • a strong record of academic publication (relative to time after initiating Ph.D. research)
  • experience with dissemination of research findings

The following will be an advantage

  • experience of studying socio-legal issues, i.e. issues intersecting law and society
  • specialisation in one or more of the following interdisciplinary fields: environmental governance, environmental law, resource conflicts, indigenous rights, social theory of nature-society relationships, or other issues central to the project
  • proven ability to work independently and within a research team
  • experience with national and international research collaboration
  • strong language skills in relevant languages

Remuneration

The position is remunerated in accordance with the Basic Collective Agreement for the Civil Service and OsloMets salary policy 1352 Postdoc. The salary is NOK 523.200 – 682 200 per year, depending on level of competence / length of service.

  • Ph.D. thesis plus up to three additional scientific publications
