The Institute of Health and Society is one of three institutes at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Oslo. The Institute covers various disciplines and consists of six departments: General Practice, Health Sciences, Health Management and Health Economics, Medical Ethics, Community Medicine and Global Health and Nursing Science.


The Institute of Health and Society bases its work on a complex understanding of disease, health and health systems. Culture, environment, economics, society and biology play direct and indirect roles. Our teaching responsibilities include seven Master’s programs, one Bachelor program and part of the Faculty’s medical school and PhD-program. We employ about 220 FTE and have almost 700 Bachelor and Master students. Annual income is about 200 mill NOK, half of which is external funding. Our researchers play an active part of public policy and disseminate new knowledge through many channels.

A temporary position is available at the Centre for Global Health as an Advisor for the Lancet One Health Commision.

The position will support the centre Managing Director and the centre Director with ongoing tasks related to the running of the Oslo-secretariat for the Lancet One Health Commission.

Responsibilities includes:

  • analysis and development tasks
  • assembling meeting reports
  • writing news stories
  • secretarial and coordinating tasks for the Centre management and the Lancet One Health Commission management team

The position will be expected to assist in providing general administrative and communication support to the various projects led by the centre as needed.

The Centre for Global Health at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Oslo has been established to coordinate and facilitate educational and scientific activities related to global health. The centre aims to contribute to the strengthening of the multidisciplinary collaboration internally at the University of Oslo and with other key players working with global health. It is located at the Institute of Health and Society (Helsam). The centre has a small core staff and a large virtual participant base.

The centre has been tasked with the coordination of the Lancet One Health Commission, which is the second Lancet Commission undertaken by the University of Oslo.

Qualification requirements

Higher education (minimum equivalent to a bachelor's degree) from University or College in relevant field is required. Documented relevant prior knowledge can replace the education requirement.

  • Fluent written and oral communication skills in English and Norwegian is required;
  • Proven good writing skills is required
  • A keen interest and knowledge of Global Health and One Health in particular is beneficial; preferably with an understanding of both human and veterinary medicine
  • Work experience from different cultural settings is beneficial
  • Event organizing experience is beneficial

Personal skills

The position requires flexibility and a willingness to take on small and large responsibilities with the Lancet One Health Commission and also the variety of other tasks in a small organization.

You are a committed and persistent person with a high working capacity who can appreciate a flexible working day. You are result-oriented. You deliver at the agreed time and quality, and you make things happen. You have a good cultural understanding and find it interesting to familiarize yourself with different subject areas.
