Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship in modelling of coordinated protein binding at intercellular membranes

Deadline: 20.11.2019

Job description

Universitetet i Oslo

The University of Oslo is Norway’s oldest and highest ranked educational and research institution, with 28 000 students and 7000 employees. With its broad range of academic disciplines and internationally recognised research communities, UiO is an important contributor to society.

The Institute of Clinical Medicine (Klinmed) is one of three institutes under the Faculty. Klinmed is responsible for the Faculty's educational and research activities at Oslo University Hospital and Akershus University Hospital. With about 800 employees spread over approximately 425 man-labour years, Klinmed is the university's largest institute. Our activities follow the clinical activity at the hospitals and are spread across a number of geographical areas.

A 2-year post-doctoral research fellowship is available at the Centre for Cancer Cell Reprogramming at Institute for Clinical Medicine, in collaboration with the Department of Mathematics at the University of Oslo. The project is funded by through the ERC Advanced Grant “Coincidence detection of proteins and lipids in regulation of cellular membrane dynamics” (CODE) led by Prof. Harald Stenmark, and the theoretical work will be performed together with Associate Professor Andreas Carlson.

The project focuses on the development of mathematical models and numerical simulations of coordinated protein binding at cell membranes. More specifically, it will address how coincidence detection of proteins and lipids achieve specificity in cytosol‐to‐membrane recruitment of proteins and their complexes. We will use mathematical modelling and numerical simulations to describe molecular kinetics of coincidence detection and predict the relationship between coincidence detection and protein localisation. The project involves a close collaboration between groups in theoretical modelling (Carlson) and in experimental cell biology (Stenmark). The candidate will be based at Department of Mathematics but will join group meetings in Stenmark´s group, which has its laboratory at Institute for Cancer Research, Oslo University Hospital, Montebello.

The main purpose of the fellowship is to qualify researchers for work in higher academic positions within their disciplines.

Qualification requirements

  • Potential candidates must have completed or be about to complete a PhD degree in biophysics, physics, applied mathematics or similar. Doctoral dissertation must be submitted for evaluation by the closing date. Appointment is dependent on the public defence of the doctoral thesis being approved within 29 February 2020.
  • Publications in internationally well-regarded, peer-reviewed scientific journals. Applicants with publications in press are also considered.
  • Experience in multidisciplinary research and knowledge/use of theoretical methods in biophysics, numerical simulations of PDE’s or coarse-grained particle models, and/or membrane modelling, is highly beneficial.
  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English.

Starting date for the position is flexible, but 01.03.2020 at the latest.
