About the position

A PhD fellowship is available at the Faculty of Biosciences and Aquaculture, Nord University (Bodø, Norway) as part of the establishment of a new research unit in the Ecology Research Group under the leadership of Professor Mark J. Costello. The position is for three years and will be available from 1st March 2020.

The proposed research concerns how to improve predictions of the effects of climate change on the ocean environment and biodiversity, particularly in relation to temperature and oxygen. It is envisaged this research will make use of biodiversity informatics, and may involve development of databases of biodiversity data from the literature. It may also include field studies using seasonally stratified Norwegian fjords as experimental sites, and/or field surveys to test hypotheses about the effects of temperature and oxygen on marine biodiversity. The details of the research will aim to build on both Professor Costello’s and the candidates’ strengths and interests.

Qualification requirements

The candidate should

• have a MSc degree (or equivalent) in biological, ecological and/or environmental sciences,
• have a university education including knowledge of biogeography, ecology and an interest in natural history,
• be fluent in written and spoken English,
• have strong computational skills and an interest in analysis of large regional and global datasets.

We are looking for motivated and systematic candidate applicants with good capabilities of working independently as well as in teams.

Proficiency in oral and written English is essential and must be documented either by the Norwegian Higher Education Entrance Qualification or internationally recognised certificates, such as TOEFL, IELTS, APIEL or similar. Skills in Scandinavian language is an advantage for the position.

The selected candidate will join the PhD programme in Aquatic Biosciences at Nord University and is expected to complete a doctorate within the three-year project period. The candidate should fulfill the admission requirements of this PhD programme at the Faculty of Biosciences and Aquaculture and participate in the training components stipulated in regulations of the PhD program. The annual salary for doctoral researchers (code 1017) is set at wage level 54, LR 20, NOK 479.600,- in the Norwegian State Salary Scale. Suitably qualified candidates may be placed in code 1378.
