Western Norway University of Applied Sciences has two PhD Research Fellow available within «Responsible innovation and Grand Societal Challenges» with affiliation to the Mohn Center for Innovation and Regional Development, at the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Campus Bergen.

Mohn Center for Innovation and Regional Development:


The Mohn center is a research and competence center in the fields of innovation and entrepreneurship. The center develops and disseminates research-based knowledge about and for innovation for use in education and regional business development. Through research and close collaborative relationships with regional industries and policy actors , the Mohns Center contributes to a responsible development of the innovation system in Western Norway. The center also coordinates a master's degree program in Innovation and Entrepreneurship and has a central role in the Western Norway University of Applied Sciences work on entrepreneurship among students and staff. The Mohns Center is a dynamic and informal work environment that is developing positively. The center currently has 21 employees.

The PhD research Fellow will be integrated in the NRC project «Responsible innovation in the Norwegian salmon farming industry: Grand Societal Challenges, Dilemmas and Improvements» that studies tensions between economic, environmental and social dilemmas, and the solutions to these tensions by mapping the global innovation networks of leading Norwegian salmon farming firms. Furthering this, the project aims to facilitate co-creation of knowledge between different stakeholders towards improvement of innovation practices and their sustainability (i.e. responsibility) in Norway, Chile, Australia and Canada.

We are looking for applicants who can help elucidate the project's overall goals through two defined and independent projects. In particular we are searching for applicants with interest of joining a research team providing guidelines for improving salmon farming firms’ responsible innovation practices.

The following topic can be of relevance for a PhD-project:

  • Analysing innovation models and networking of Norwegian salmon farming firms
  • Analysing dilemmas between economic, environmental and social issues arising through firms’ innovation activity in different countries
  • Investigating the effects of innovation on the economic performance of firms
  • Analysing the economic, environmental and social effects of the salmon farming policy in Norway, Chile and Canada

The candidates must enrol in the PhD program «Responsible Innovation and Regional Development» at Western Norway University of Applied Sciences and must meet the formal admission requirements for admission into the PhD program. The candidate must be enrolled as aPhD student within 3 months from the start of the employment. The employment period may be reduced if the successful applicant had held previous employment as a research fellow.

Key duties- and responsibilities:

The PhD fellow will be part of an approved program for a PhD degree within a period of 3 years, from 01.02.2020.

Qualifications:

Applicants should have a master's degree in innovation and entrepreneurship or equivalent education with relevance to the subject area of «Responsible innovation and Grand Societal Challenges». The master's thesis must be submitted for assessment by the application deadline, and the master's degree must be approved no later than 4 weeks after the application deadline.

The application must contain a project description of up to five pages, explaining the topic, the problem, the choice of theory and method, as well as the plan for implementation of a potential project. It will be applied in the assessment of the capplicants qualifications. A final project description for the PhD projects will be developed in consultation with the supervisors.

The following qualifications will be particularly emphasized:

  • Academic qualifications within the advertised area.
  • Quality of the master's thesis.
  • The project description.
  • Additional scientific publications.

The PhD scholarships are recruitment position that will contribute to an active research environment at the University College in Western Norway.

Other qualifications:

  • Knowledge about the salmon farming industry (for both positions)
  • English Language skills (for both positions)
  • Spanish Language skills (for one positions)

The PhD fellows appointed must be able to work independently and as a co-researcher in the research group of the umbrella project.

Initial salaries will be offered at grade 54 (nok 479.600) (code 1017) in the Civil Service pay grade table scale.
