About the research field and content of the fellowship

Doctoral projects

Candidates must qualify for admission to the university’s PhD programme, and the doctoral education is carried out within this programme. Applicants who already hold a PhD will not be considered.

The academic and research community supporting the doctoral programme with supervision and research training comprises a number of professors and associate professors working in the relevant academic fields.

Project description

The successful candidate will explore the relationship between work, education, health, social participation and career guidance. Here, career guidance is understood as any intervention that supports individuals and groups to a) discover more about work, leisure and learning, and b) consider their place in the world and plan for their future. As research on career guidance in Norway has largely focused on young people, in this project, we want to refocus attention on adults and their need for career support.

The project could take a variety of forms, but we are particularly interested in hearing from candidates who are interested in exploring one or more of the following areas:

  • How lifelong career guidance can support marginalised people and help address marginalisation. This might include a focus on unemployed workers or other forms of marginalisation.
  • The provision of career guidance and other forms of career support in the workplace—particularly where these are used to support individuals who have a temporary or permanently reduced capacity to work.
  • The role of career guidance in supporting transitions, retraining and career change during adulthood.
  • The role of career guidance in supporting health and wellbeing.
  • The role of career guidance in supporting community cohesion and local economic and social development.
  • The role of new technologies in career guidance for adults.

The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, implementing and organising a research project. This research project should lead to new knowledge about careers and career guidance in relation to the topics and issues highlighted above. New knowledge is understood as a contribution to the growing field of career guidance, nationally and internationally. The research fellow will be responsible for finding and justifying the choice of theory on which his/her analyses are based. Moreover, he/she will be required to a) document connections between the theory of science and the forms of knowledge that the research brings forward; and b) apply and/or develop research methods that will help answer the research questions.

The successful candidate will be responsible for communicating his/her research in a doctoral dissertation—and ideally through scientific journals, digital platforms and teaching. The research fellow will join the academic environment within the Section of Guidance and Supervision, and in particular the master’s programme in career guidance.

The position is linked to the Department of Social Sciences and Guidance
