The Department of Education was established in 1938 and is one of three departmentsand is one of three departmentsat The Faculty of Educational Sciences.The research is based on traditions from both the social and the human sciences, and the department thus accommodates great breadth in topics and perspectives. The department employs approximately 100 people; 49 scientific staff, 35 doctoral and post-doctoral students, and 16 administrative/technical staff. The number of students is approximately 900.

A permanent position is available at the Department of Education for an Associate Professor in Educational Psychology. We are seeking applicants with a research interest in the conditions that support socio-emotional development in children and youth, and how this is related to learning and well-being inside and/or outside of educational settings. We welcome applicants who are motivated to apply this knowledge to develop the field of educational and psychological counseling (broadly defined). In our assessment of applicants we will also emphasize experience and competency in quantitative methodology related to longitudinal and/or experimental designs.

The successful candidate is expected to strengthen research in Educational Psychology and contribute to one of the Faculty of Educational Sciences’ research groups.

The successful candidate is also expected to actively participate in the collective development of our education programs and teach at the bachelor- and master-level programs in Educational Psychology.

Main Duties:

  • Contribution to the development of research and study programs in Educational Psychology
  • Contribution to one of the faculty’s research groups
  • Participation in national and international research networks
  • Participation in planning, teaching, coaching and supervision in the bachelor and master levels courses within Educational Psychology
  • Research dissemination
  • External fund raising
  • Administrative tasks

Qualification requirements

  • PhD in Educational Psychology or equivalent relevant academic qualifications
  • Documented research competence on the conditions that support socio-emotional development in children and youth, and how this is related to learning and well-being inside and/or outside of educational settings
  • Documented scientific competence as Associate Professor relevant for the announced position
  • Experience and interest in the development of the field of Educational Psychology
  • Documented knowledge of and familiarity with the Norwegian and Scandinavian educational systems and/or counseling services for children and families
  • Competency in quantitative methodology
  • Commitment to teaching
  • Proficiency in Norwegian or one of the other Scandinavian languages (Swedish or Danish)
  • Proficiency in English, spoken and written
  • Personal suitability and motivation
  • The criteria that will be considered are the applicant’s academic, professional, and pedagogical qualifications, plus personal qualifications including Scandinavian language (Norwegian, Swedish, or Danish) and English proficiency.
  • In the ranking of applicants, the whole range of qualifications will be considered and assessed, including communication skills and personal suitability for the position.

Formal regulations

The successful candidate who at the time of appointment cannot document basic teaching qualifications will be required to obtain such qualifications within a two-year period.

The successful candidate must demonstrate mastery of both English and one of the Scandinavian languages as working languages. If an appointee is not fluent in a Scandinavian language, the appointee will be expected within a two-year period to learn sufficient Norwegian to be able to participate actively in all functions the position may involve.
