A permanent position is available at the Department of Molecular Medicine, Institute of Basic Medical Sciences for an Associate Professor in the subject area of physiology.

The Division of Physiology has strong traditions within neuroscience and circulatory physiology, with a prominent international profile. Currently, the Division consists of ten professors/associate professors, permanently employed technicians and a large number of postdoctoral fellows, PhD students, Master's students and medical students in the medical research training program. The Division uses research techniques ranging from molecular biology and transgenic animal models to functional imaging and computer modelling, to investigate physiological processes from cellular to systems levels. The Division has its own core facilities for histology, cell culture and molecular biology, and has access to other core facilities at the Institute of Basic Medical Sciences. The Division runs multiple two-photon microscopes, some of which are part of a University core facility and classified as national infrastructure. Current research activities encompass topics related to the nervous system, the cardiovascular system, and functional interactions between these.

We wish to recruit a candidate with a research focus in physiology that synergizes with the Division´s ongoing research, and in particular research in systems physiology. Applicants are expected to have a strong background in physiological research. The successful applicant will be able to establish a dynamic and innovative research group with potential to recruit high caliber students and postdocs.

The successful candidate is expected to initiate and lead research, supervise PhD candidates, participate in teaching and in exam setting and assessment at all levels, and to carry out administrative duties in accordance with the needs of the Division of Physiology.

Qualification requirements

• PhD or equivalent academic qualifications with a specialization in physiology
• A strong background in physiological research
• A degree in medicine (MD or equivalent) will be considered positively
• Documented pedagogical skills
• Potential for project acquisition and project management
• Fluent oral and written communication skills in English and a Scandinavian language

The following qualifications will count in the assessment of the applicants:We aim to recruit a candidate at an early phase of his/her career and who has already demonstrated a promising research trajectory. Candidates must fulfil the qualification criteria. The successful applicant will have a clear plan for his/her research and for acquiring external funding. The plan must include a description on how research will complement and synergize with ongoing research in the Division and the Department. High ambitions and quality of teaching, research and communication are expected.

Formal regulations

The successful candidate who at the time of appointment cannot document basic teaching qualifications will be required to obtain such qualifications within a three-year period.

The successful candidate must demonstrate mastery of both English and one of the Scandinavian languages as working languages. If an appointee is not fluent in a Scandinavian language, the appointee will be expected within a two-year period to learn sufficient Norwegian to be able to participate actively in all functions the position may involve.
