Researcher in Material Science / Physics

Deadline: 12.02.2020

Job description

Universitetet i Oslo

The University of Oslo is Norway’s oldest and highest rated institution of research and education with 28 000 students and 7000 employees. Its broad range of academic disciplines and internationally esteemed research communities make UiO an important contributor to society.

Centre for Materials Science and Nanotechnology (SMN) is an interdisciplinary focus field for material and energy research at the University of Oslo. SMN has focused on basic research in renewable energy and environmentally friendly use of fossil energy sources. The center consists of research groups from the Department of Physics (Fi) and Chemistry (Ki), has about 100 employees from around the world and manages more than 80 projects funded by the EU, the RCN and others.

A position as a Researcher is available at Department of Physics/Centre for materials science and nanotechnology, as part of the research project titled ‘Additively manufactured magnetic high entropy alloys for renewable electricity’ (MAGNIFICENT), with financial support from the Norwegian Research Council. Starting date no later than 01.04.2020.

The fellowship period is 3 years for a researcher that can take on the research obligations related to both structural and magnetic characterisation.

More about the position

The position is part of a new research activity focused on high entropy alloys (HEA) for renewable electricity aiming to introduce a new generation of materials for soft magnets produced with additive manufacturing by laser metal deposition of multi-element components. The goal is to identify and develop industrial-scale processes for novel soft magnets with superior magnetic properties that exhibit significantly reduced losses and fatigue compared to the current state-of-the-art materials. This work is a collaboration between SINTEF Industry, Department of Physics at UiO, Slovac Academy of Science, National Technical University of Athens (Greece), Oak Ridge National Laboratory (USA) and The University of Manchester (UK).

The researcher will play important role in identifying promising materials through structural and magnetic characterisation and clarifying physics behind the enhanced magnetic performance of the materials. Structural characterisation will be done combining x-ray diffraction and analytical scanning and transmission electron microscopy techniques. In particular, the researcher should be able to utilise a FEI TITAN G2 60-300 instrument equipped with a monochromator and Cs probe corrector. For magnetic screening and characterisation, magneto-optical imaging (MOI), magneto-optical Kerr Effect (MOKE) microscopy, magnetic force microscopy (MFM), vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) and superconducting interference device (SQUID) magnetometry will be used.
