Circle U. is an open and vivid European University alliance between Aarhus University (Denmark), Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (Germany), King’s College London (United Kingdom), Université de Paris (France), the University of Belgrade (Serbia), UCLouvain (Belgium) and the University of Oslo (Norway).


Circle U. unites more than 300.000 students and 50.000 staff in seven countries in a collective effort to improve and reshape European higher education. The partner universities are research-intensive, comprehensive universities, guided by common values of academic freedom and integrity, inclusiveness and responsibility to society. We embrace European identity in all our diversity. This is the foundation on which we build our alliance.


By 2023, Circle U. will create new learning activities connecting education and research on climate, democracy and global health. We will develop challenge-based innovation initiatives with real world impact, and open the walls of our classrooms for more virtual and physical mobility of students and staff. We will build structures for integrating the universities and strengthen our mutual trust. And we will be ready to scale up our cooperation to affect all areas of our universities in the next phase of our cooperation.

Tasks and responsabilities

The person appointed will serve as Secretary General of the Circle U. AISBL.

She/he will be responsible for overseeing the development and implementation of the Circle U. vision, mission statement and project plan, in close cooperation with university management, academic leads, student representatives and project managers at each member university.

The Secretary General will coordinate a team based in Oslo (treasurer) and London (Measuring Evaluating and Learning officer) that will facilitate communication between the Circle U. members and coordinate and support the implementation of all activities of the Circle U. alliance.

The position will initially be located in Louvain-la-Neuve in Belgium, but the person appointed will also be expected to work in Brussels and spend time at each Circle U. partner university. The position can be moved to Brussels permanently in the future.

The Secretary General will represent Circle U. towards external stakeholders, EU institutions and other bodies. She/he will assist the President and the Chair of the Management Board in the execution of the decisions of the General Assembly and the Management Board, prepare the budget and the accounts, and direct and supervise the Circle U. administration.

Profile and skills

We are looking for an outstanding candidate with the following profile and skills:

  • A master’s degree or equivalent. PhD-level qualifications will be an advantage;
  • A strong track record in successful international project management in higher education:
  • Familiarity with EU Institutions and programmes related to education, research and innovation;
  • Previous work experience in a research-intensive comprehensive university will be an advantage;
  • Strategic, conceptual, organizational and diplomatic skills;
  • Decision‐making and interpersonal skills, including the ability to cooperate with academic staff across different countries, institutions and disciplines;
  • Excellent communication skills in English, both oral and written, and experience with the media;
  • Proficiency in at least one other European language used by the Circle U. partners will be an advantage.
